Suralco Paranam Thermal Powerplant (1989 – 2015)
This was the longest and most defining chapter of Floris’s career. Over 25 years, he advanced from Planner to Maintenance Supervisor, playing a vital role in keeping Suriname’s largest power generation facility operating safely and reliably.
Mechanical Planner (1989 – 1993)
- Designed and managed maintenance schedules for turbines, boilers, and plant systems.
- Implemented compliance checks against ASME and NEN standards.
- Developed best practices for preventive maintenance.
Turnaround Coordinator (1993 – 1998)
- Led large-scale plant shutdowns (turnarounds) for inspection and maintenance.
- Managed resources, budgets, and cross-departmental teams.
- Applied Six Sigma and Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) to optimize processes.
- Ensured turnarounds were completed on time, avoiding costly downtime.
Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor (1998 – 2015)
- Directed teams maintaining steam turbines, gas turbines, boilers, cooling towers, pumps, and compressors.
- Supervised corrective and preventive maintenance to keep equipment reliable.
- Conducted accident investigations and introduced new safety measures.
- Oversaw high-risk assignments such as confined space work, asbestos handling, and crane maintenance.
- Produced reports on KPIs, downtime, and reliability improvements.
Impact Example: Floris’s leadership at Suralco ensured power reliability for the nation, prevented costly breakdowns, and built a culture of safety-first maintenance.
Keeping a powerplant running means more than turning turbines—it means safeguarding energy, people, and progress for an entire nation.
